EFRAG, Europe's voice in corporate reporting and a key actor within the IFRS reporting landscape, is currently recruiting a (Senior) Technical Manager for its financial reporting pillar. The role is based at EFRAG's Brussels office.

EFRAG's financial reporting mandate is to influence IFRS standard setting through reactive activities and a proactive research agenda, and to advise the European Commission on the endorsement of new and amended IFRS Accounting Standards. Our (Senior) Technical Managers work on several different projects. Specific role responsibilities will vary according to your level of experience and your overall project assignments.

(Senior) Technical Manager: Financial Institutions Specialist


EFRAG, Europe’s voice in corporate reporting and a key actor within the IFRS reporting landscape, is currently recruiting a Financial Reporting (Senior) Technical Manager - Financial Institutions Specialist to its financial instruments group within the financial reporting pillar. The function is based at EFRAG’s Brussels office. 

The mandate of the financial reporting pillar is to influence IFRS accounting standard setting through EFRAG’s reactive activities and EFRAG’s proactive research agenda and to advise the European Commission on the endorsement of new and amended IFRS Accounting Standards and IFRS interpretations. As Financial Reporting (Senior) Technical Manager you would work on several different projects which have impact on Financial Institutions. Projects not only relate to financial instruments or IFRS 17, but also cover other areas of accounting, such as endorsement advice for the forthcoming IFRS 18. Specific role responsibilities will vary according to your level of experience and project assignments.

EFRAG, Europe’s leading voice in influencing IFRS development and a key actor within the corporate reporting landscape is currently recruiting full-time technical staff (with different levels of experience) for its financial reporting pillar. The role is based at EFRAG’s Brussels office.

The mandate of the financial reporting pillar is to influence IFRS standard setting through EFRAG’s reactive activities and EFRAG’s proactive research agenda and to advise the European Commission on the endorsement of new and amended IFRS standards. Technical staff are expected to be involved across these financial reporting pillar activities.

A career within the EFRAG financial reporting pillar represents a unique opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of IFRS Standards and their practical application by European companies. It is an opportunity to work within a dynamic multicultural and intellectually stimulating environment and to engage directly  with the perspectives of multiple stakeholders including auditors, preparers, users, regulators, and EU and global national standard setters including the IASB.  

EFRAG is looking for technical financial reporting staff with different levels of experience (from directly from university to over 10 years of experience for senior functions). 

The financial reporting pillar also presents an opportunity to be part of activities where there is an interaction between EFRAG’s traditional financial reporting pillar and its newly established sustainability reporting pillar. 

COMPETENCIES

The following competencies are expected of EFRAG technical staff:

  • Experience in either the preparation, assurance, analysis, interpretation or enforcement of IFRS financial statements 

  • Prior experience in standard-setting activities is a plus

  • Knowledge of IFRS Standards and the Conceptual Framework

  • Ability to conduct an in-depth analysis of technical conceptual and application issues

  • Excellent English writing skills and strong verbal communication skills including the ability to credibly present and influence the senior experts in EFRAG’s governance bodies

  • Good listening skills, and an ability to take on board and synthesise multiple stakeholder perspectives

  • Good team player and effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders

  • Effective project management (i.e., project planning and execution) skills

  • Having an European Economic Area nationality (or double nationality)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively monitor IASB meetings related to its research, standard setting, and maintenance workplans 

  • Monitor IFRS Interpretations Committee meeting discussions and support EU stakeholders participating in these meetings

  • Contribute to EFRAG research agenda through the analysis of gaps in existing accounting requirements on research topics and developing proposals to address these accounting gaps

  • Draft and present issues papers for discussion and decision making at meetings held by the EFRAG Financial Reporting Technical Expert Group and Financial Reporting Board (i.e., the governance bodies) and the various supporting EFRAG working groups

  • Coordinate and support the meetings of the EFRAG governance bodies and EFRAG working groups

  • Draft EFRAG due process documents (i.e., Draft and Final Comment letters, Endorsement Advices, Discussion Papers, and Staff briefings)

  • Conduct and document results of field testing and impact analysis including cost-benefit analysis and the review of current reporting practices

  • Conduct pre- and post-consultation stakeholder outreach activities and write reports on the outcomes of the outreach

  • Support the outreach engagements by EFRAG leadership

TERMS

EFRAG welcomes applications for either full-time employment contracts or secondments for two years (a different duration can be discussed). 

Part-time of 80% to 90% can also be discussed.

Senior Secondments in Kind


​EFRAG is looking for senior secondments in kind to support its work on the sustainability reporting work plan for 2024 including sector ESRS, implementation support, non-EU ESRS and interoperability with other frameworks and standards.

​EFRAG is very grateful for the wide range of organisations that have provided secondments in kind for the technical work on European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). EFRAG seeks further contributions in the form of secondments in kind from a wide range of stakeholders.

In particular, EFRAG is looking for senior secondments in kind to support its work on:

  • Implementation support for the first set of ESRS: that is,
    • implementation guidance on climate change transition plans;
    • examples of emerging market practices under ESRS, notably of issues addressed in the implementation guidance provided in EFRAG IG 1 – Materiality assessment and IG 2 – Value chain, but of other topics as well;
    • implementation guidance on most frequently asked questions;
  • Development of the draft ESRS for non-EU companies as required by the CSRD;
  • Interoperability: that is, preparation and comparison of mapping tables with international initiatives other than the ISSB; and
  • Sector-specific ESRS for high-impact sectors and financial institutions.

In most cases, practical expertise and real business experience (for sectors in particular) is expected. For certain cases, the secondment of a small team of experts would be preferable.

Ideally, secondments in-kind are arranged on a full-time basis, but they can be arranged on a minimum, part-time basis (50%) for a period of at least six months in principle. As part of the selection process, an interview with the candidates will be conducted to determine the type of work that the secondments entail. Academics are also welcome to apply.

​In its broadened role as the technical advisor to the European Commission in the development of draft European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), EFRAG seeks to recruit both permanent and seconded (paid or in-kind) sustainability reporting professionals.

​EFRAG seeks individuals that are keen to participate in the ongoing sustainability standard-setting activities, that have experience and are willing to invest time in developing expertise on sustainability topics and corporate reporting and can adapt to the fast-evolving sustainability reporting landscape.

We are looking for candidates with different levels of experience and seniority from junior level to senior level, depending on skills and expertise, that are EEA nationals and are willing to relocate and work from EFRAG's Brussels office in case of paid positions. Work with EFRAG - Internships

We offer opportunities for university students and recent graduates in the form of internships lasting between six and twelve months. This will allow interns to acquire an understanding of EFRAG’s work in the financial reporting and/or sustainability reporting fields.

Applicants for an internship are eager to keep learning to get a taste of professional life, discover how we make an impact that matters, and get ahead in your career!

You will gain:

  • An overview of the EFRAG’s objectives and activities

  • A first professional and personal experience in the dynamic world of corporate reporting standard setting and the identification of good reporting practices in an European and global environment

You will work in the EFRAG offices in Brussels.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

You must have a University degree or be in the final year of your Masters in economics, finance, accountancy, sustainability reporting or related relevant subjects. In addition, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A demonstrated ability to conduct analytical work, exercise good judgment and work as part of a team;

  • Be proficient in English 

EFRAG pays a compensation based on a Belgium internship contract as a contribution to living costs.

Join EFRAG as Academic Fellow 

EFRAG seeks an academic fellow with experience in sustainability reporting or financial reporting and IFRS Standards with a good understanding of broader corporate reporting to work with EFRAG.

 

EFRAG values conceptual and empirical contribution of academic researchers in its technical activity and is investing in its research activities and liaison and cooperation with academics. 

 

EFRAG is working both on its own Research Agenda and contributes European views and insights to the IASB’s research activities. 

 

Since 2018, EFRAG is active in the sustainability reporting domain. In addition to its historical mission, in 2021 the European Commission mandated EFRAG to work on draft European Sustainability Reporting Standards now confirmed by the political agreement reached on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Since 2017, EFRAG operates an Academic Panel and an Academic Network. EFRAG organises and contributes to academic workshops.

 

The academic fellow will help us to develop these activities further and provide input from an academic perspective and experience to EFRAG’s activities. In consultation with EFRAG’s leadership team, the successful applicant will also identify which of the available projects he or she will focus on, in order to ensure relevance to his or her own academic work and future publications.
